THANKSGIVING GIVEAWAY

Helping the families in the Greater Houston Metro during Thanksgiving is of so important, considering the issue of food insecurity that persists in many communities across the country. Thanksgiving is a time when families come together to express gratitude and share a meal, but for numerous households, this celebration can be marred by the harsh reality of not having enough food on the table. Food insecurity, which refers to limited or uncertain access to nutritious food, affects millions of Americans, including children and the elderly. By extending a helping hand during Thanksgiving, through the Houston NPHC food drives and giveaways we can make a significant impact in alleviating the struggles faced by food-insecure families. It is not just about filling their bellies but also about providing them with a sense of dignity, compassion, and support during a time that should be filled with warmth and togetherness.

SANTA’S WONDERLAND

The Houston NPHC toy drives for a Santa Wonderland exhibit the rich kindness and generosity that exists within the Divine 9 community. Our annual toy drives serve as a beacon of hope for families in need, bringing a touch of magic and joy to their lives during the holiday season. By donating toys and gifts, D9 community members create a sense of solidarity, compassion, and due care for those facing financial hardships. The philanthropic spirit of giving not only provides children with presents they may not have otherwise received, but it also brings smiles, laughter, and a sense of belonging to families who may be severely challenged during the holidays. Our community toy drive truly embody the spirit of unity and togetherness. It is a reminder to all of us that there is phenomenal power in coming together as a collective to make a positive difference in the lives of those who need it most.

HBCU COLLEGE FAIR

Engaging high school students and exposing them to the history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is of utmost importance in today’s society.  We aim to celebrate the highlights and the significant role these institutions continue to play in educating Black American students. By learning about the legacy of HBCUs, students gain a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped Black education in America. They develop an appreciation for the perseverance, resilience, and resilience of those who fought for equal access to education. We believe that exposure to HBCU history allows students to recognize the continued importance of these institutions in providing a supportive and nurturing environment for Black students to thrive academically, socially, and culturally. HBCUs serve as vibrant centers of excellence, producing notable alumni who have made significant contributions to various fields.

TOYS FOR TOTS

Our “Toys for Tots” program is an important initiative that plays a key role in brightening the holiday season for children in need. The program collects and distributes toys to children who may not otherwise receive gifts during the holidays. Beyond the joy of receiving a new toy, “Toys for Tots” brings hope, happiness, and a sense of normalcy to the lives of disadvantaged children. By providing them with a special gift, the program helps foster a sense of inclusion, boosts self-esteem, and reinforces the belief that they are cared for and valued by their community. Additionally, “Toys for Tots” promotes the spirit of philanthropy and compassion, encouraging individuals and communities to come together in support of those less fortunate. This program exemplifies the true essence of the holiday season, spreading love, kindness, and the joy of giving to children who deserve nothing but the best.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Teaching about the history of the Divine 9 fraternities and sororities, as well as the rich Black American culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), holds critical importance in promoting inclusivity, understanding, and appreciation for the contributions of Black Americans to American society. These organizations and institutions have played a pivotal role in fostering academic excellence, leadership, and community service among Black students. By educating students about the history of the Divine 9 and the significance of HBCUs, we empower them with knowledge that challenges stereotypes and fosters a deeper appreciation for the Black American experience. It allows students of all backgrounds to understand the unique struggles, achievements, and cultural heritage of Black Americans. Moreover, teaching about these topics encourages dialogue, empathy, and respect for Black American achievements.
